Gay Mormon convention. Affirmation: Gay and Lesbian Mormons will hold its 11th Annual General Conference in Reno, Nevada, Oct. 6-8.
Anti-gay activities of local Mormons prompted the group to hold their annual meeting in Reno. National Coordinator Mel Barber said, "We need to do whatever possible to combat the alarming rise in hate crimes and violence against gays. Our presence in Reno is the first step."
Last year, Mormon-led anti-gay groups successfully blocked the scheduled National Gay Rodeo Finals. When they failed to block annual gay pride festivities, anti-gay demonstrations were organized instead. Said Barber, "It is only a small portion of the Mormon community that is actually anti-gay. Most Mormons know the meaning of persecution in their own lives, and don't support intolerance."

Gay and Lesbian Atheists believe that each individual must discover for himself or herself an ethic for their own life. Formal religions grew up as a result of fear of the unknown and a natural inclination to leave those hard, unanswered questions of life to the experts, the authorities. What we overlook is the fact that the only thing that makes them authorities is their assertion that they are such.
GALA Review is a bi-monthly publication of the Gay And Lesbian Atheists, and is mailed free to all members. It features articles and news items relating to religion and homosexuality, interviews, book and film reviews. Contact GALA, P.O. Box 14142, San Francisco, CA 94114.
